In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the traditional political and social order in many Asian countries was in crisis under the pressure of colonialism and forced modernization, non-revolutionary reformist trends gradually emerged as an alternative to violent means. In Vietnam, Phan Châu Trinh stood out as a representative figure of this moderate reformist trend. His ideas were formed from the intermingling of traditional values and the influences of Western democratic and progressive thought, emphasizing the enlightenment of the people, the revitalization of national spirit, and social reform from a cultural and educational foundation. When compared to other non-revolutionary reformers in modern Asia, Phan Châu Trinh's path both demonstrated profound enlightenment and reflected the inevitable historical limitations of a reform model not based on revolutionary struggle.
