Abstract

Doc troi hoa lua is the fifth poetry collection by teacher-poet Luong Minh Cu, following his previous works: Chan troi vung sau (1976), Bat chot mua xuan (2007), Nu tam xuan (2015), and Anh di giua mua hoa tam giac mach (2023). Having read, reflected upon, and thoroughly engaged with these five collections consecutively, I have had the opportunity to examine and confidently identify the distinct poetic voice of a writer who once carried both a gun and a pen on the fierce battlefield against foreign invaders. Through wartime, post-war years, and the national renewal period, despite historical transformations and an ever-expanding lyrical scope, the nuances of Luong Minh Cu’s poetic voice remain unwavering, becoming even more intense and refined over time. In other words, his poetic voice demonstrates remarkable stability and resilience, artistic, yet never monotonous; profound, yet never dry or tedious. Truly, great poetry must possess a tone, and the greatest poetry, a prominent one. In this regard, Luong Minh Cu’s body of work, particularly the collection Doc troi hoa lua, clearly exhibits three dominant tonal qualities: a generous and optimistic tone, an intimate tone, and a philosophical-contemplative tone. This article focuses on analyzing these three distinctive voices.
