Abstract

The article describes social stratification and social attitudes among Catholic residents living in three villages of Thong Nhat commune (former Phu Cuong commune, Dinh Quan district), Dong Nai province, based on the data from a survey conducted in 2020. Social stratification is measured by the quantitative class structure and the distribution of income and estimated household’s assets by class. Social attitudes present in the three indicators: opinions about factors that support personal advancement, opinions about social equality and justice, opinions about trust in people and in some social institutions. The class structure in the Catholic population in the surveyed villages mainly consists of four classes with approximately equal proportions: non-agricultural private owners, farmers, skilled workers and unskilled workers. The difference in income and estimated household’s assets by class is very clear, and the dispersion of these two indicators within each class is also quite high. The majority of Catholic people in the surveyed villages believes that the three most important factors that help individuals advance are qualifications, money, and a family with well-off economic conditions. Most people think that today’s society is equal. Opinions about trust in people and institutions appear rather bleak. Most people only believe in family, somewhat in relatives. The percentage of trusting friends, colleagues, and people in public is quite low. The percentage of trust in health care institutions and authorities is also not high.
