Abstract

This article focuses on analyzing the system of conceptual metaphors in Drifting (Trôi), a short story by Nguyen Ngoc Tu — a representative work that encapsulates the sense of fragility and uncertainty in life. Drawing on conceptual metaphor theory in combination with discourse analysis methods, the study identifies and systematizes the core metaphors that govern the semantic structure of the work. These conceptual metaphors interact closely to create both the profound ideological depth and the distinctive atmosphere of Drifting, while simultaneously articulating a pervasive sense of dissolution, impermanence, and identity crisis. Approaching the text through the lens of conceptual metaphor theory not only expands the dimensions of exploring its worldview but also highlights Nguyen Ngoc Tu’s rich artistic style, deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of Southern Vietnam./.
